Abstract
Early man was an intelligent and competent observer who knew and made use of natural directions (basically the solstice positions). One of the earliest systematic observations was using a line-of-sight to natural features on the horizon to the sun marking positions of the sun on the horizon and points in time. Constructed lines-of-sight systems developed from the use of natural features to mark positions of the sun. The association of the position of the sun on the horizon and events of importance to the culture, for example, planting time, had a high survival value for the culture. A reasoned development of Linear Solar Observatories from the level of awareness to the complex observation systems and models of the systems is described.
