Abstract

After first arguing that linear-response theory is an appealing method for performing many molecular-dynamics calculations for nearly-free-electron metals, we make a careful derivation of the result written down by Cohen in 1962. In so doing we find a subtle mistake in Cohen's result and extend the theory to include all many-body effects insofar as they can be included in the static dielectric function.
