Abstract

In this paper, a new discrete-time optimal flow controller for connection-oriented data transmission networks is proposed. Two types of data losses which occur in the networks are explicitly taken into account. These comprise packet losses caused by buffer overflows and also those losses which may occur during the transmission process. In order to design the controller we consider a quadratic quality criterion with different weights assigned to the congested node queue length and data transmission rates. The controller proposed in this paper eliminates the risk of exceeding the bottleneck node buffer capacity. Furthermore, conditions for full bottleneck link bandwidth utilization are presented and proved. Performance of the proposed algorithm is thoroughly verified by computer simulations.
