Abstract

Light propagating in a ``cubic magnetic crystal'' perpendicular to M is subject to a linear magnetic birefringence. The origin and representation of this birefringence is discussed. In the ferrimagnetic garnets several mechanisms may be identified, but the overwhelming part is apparently associated with the magnetostrictive distortion. Measurements are presented for each of the rare-earth iron garnets at 77° and 300°K.
