Abstract

The stability of fluid flow in a circular pipe to infinitesimal disturbances is investigated by making use of a method of eigenfunction expansion, taking into account the three-dimensional variation of disturbance velocities. Numerical computations show that the Poiseuille flow is unstable for the Reynolds numbers beyond a critical value with any one of axial wave numbers considered. The minimum critical Reynolds number corresponds to rotationally symmetric spiral mode of oscillations and is found to be 600. The critical Reynolds numbers for the axisymmetric and non-symmetric modes are 40000 and 8600, respectively.
