Abstract

Stability characteristics are presented for a family of plane wake-shear layer velocity profiles. The presence of shear across the wake, or any other distortion which breaks the profile symmetry, forces the neutrally stable modes to be singular. The neutral modes, the domains of absolute and convective instability, and the parameter conditions for which the von Kármán mode of vortex roll-up for a wake changes to a shear layer mode of roll-up as the velocity ratio increases have been computed.
