Abstract
If it is only assumed that the electromagnetic tensor is antisymmetric the field equations derived from a non-linear Lagrangian can be reduced to linear differential equations by a change of field variables. In contradistinction the restriction to a rotational tensor leads to non-linear electrodynamics.
