Abstract

The linear thermal expansions x i ( i = a, b, c ) of ferroelectric Rb 2 CoCl 4 single crystals were measured by means of a clip-type dilatometer using four strain gauge elements down to liquid helium temperature. Anomalous parts of the strains along the a - and b -directions appeared with opposite signs below the T i . Anomalies along the pseudo-hexagonal c -directions are smaller than that along the other directions. The linear thermal expansion coefficients f i ( i = a, b, c ) showed anomalies at the successive phase transition temperatures T C2 = 73.7 K, T C1 = 198.3 K, T i = 292.6 K in the heating process. Volume thermal expansion coefficient g of this substance showed small anomaly even around each phase transition temperature but negative value below about 20 K.
