Abstract

High quality organic 4-methyl-3-nitrobenzoic acid (4M3N) single crystal was grown by Bridgman-Stockbarger method. The crystal structure and lattice parameters of the 4M3N single crystal were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD) analysis. The functional groups present in the grown 4M3N crystal were confirmed by FTIR spectral analysis. The organic 4M3N crystal shows 80 % optical transmittance in the Visible to near IR region. The calculated optical bandgap energy was found to be 2.90 eV. Third order nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear optical absorption coefficient and nonlinear susceptibility values were calculated from Z-scan experiment.
