Abstract

Prism coupling techniques have been used to evaluate the optical properties of asymmetric slab waveguides formed from thin spun films of the polydiacetylenes poly(4BCMU) and poly(3BCMU). These measurements demonstrate the guiding of 1.06 μm light over distances greater than 3 cm in the films. When examined under polarized light the spun films appear isotropic in the plane of the guide, however the coupling angle observed for the TM mode was ∼ 6 ° higher than that of the TE mode, indicating that the refractive index normal to the plane of the film is lower.
