Abstract

Linear poly(butylene isophthalate) (PBIP) was synthesized from dimethylisophthalate (DMIP) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) using Ti(OBu) 4 as catalyst; randomly branched samples were obtained similarly by the addition of small amounts of tris(hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC) as a trifunctional comonomer. These samples were investigated for the content of cyclic oligomers, molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity. The amount of cyclic oligomers is larger than in poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBTP) and the most abundant among them is the cyclic monomer. The amount of cyclic oligomers accounts for the discrepancy between molecular weights obtained by vapour pressure osmometry and titration; the effect of cyclic oligomers on molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity is discussed. Both vapour pressure osmometry and dilute solution viscometry suggest a strong polymer/solvent interaction between PBIP and CHCl 3. The intrinsic viscosity of branched samples correlates with that of linear samples, having the same M w through the branching parameter 〈 g 3〉 w with an exponent 1.5.
