Abstract
A combination of sensitive calorimetry and neutron diffraction data is presented demonstrating the formation of solid monolayers for linear alcohols (c5 to c19) adsorbed from their liquids to a graphite surface. The results reveal a significant odd–even variation in the monolayer melting points, much bigger than the bulk alcohols, that appears to be structural in origin.
