Abstract

The photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson said that “To take a photograph is to align the head, the eye and the heart”.1 This line of sight has been evident in many of the moving images that have documented the impacts of COVID-19 on individuals and populations—the care and exhaustion of front-line health workers, mass burials in India and northern Brazil, the first hug after months of physical distancing, and acts of gratitude. The focus of each picture tells a unique story. Photographs are also a compelling way to highlight wider social issues.
