Abstract

Statistics of lightning parameters is the key to lightning protection of transmission line. Line corridor grid method (LCGM) is a relatively precise method to calculate lightning parameters along the transmission line, however, this method must base on the original lightning location data, which seriously confines the application of this method on lightning shielding performance estimation of transmission line. In this paper, an improved method, line corridor grid method with lightning parameter maps (LCGMLPM), is proposed. LCGMLPM employs the idea of sections of fixed width corridor as the statistical cells, which is similar with LCGM. In order to avoid the defects of employing original lightning location data on lightning shielding performance estimation of transmission line by LCGM, lightning parameter distribution maps are devised to take the place of the original lightning location data in LCGM. Furthermore, taking the statistics of ground flash density of transmission line as an example, we analyze the statistical error between LCGMLPM and LCGM. The results are as follows: the lightning parameter's statistical value calculated by LCGMLPM is extraordinarily close to the one calculated by LCGM and the relative error is not more than 10%, which demonstrates the method proposed in this paper is reliable for statistics of lightning parameters.
