Abstract

Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image size Notes 1. The interested reader will find a detailed survey of Mauritian literature in French in Joubert. More recently several studies have been published in English but they tend to focus on francophone literature. See, for example, Hawkins, O’ Flaherty, Prabhu and Ravi. Butlin's anthology provides a fascinating selection of recent poetry and short stories but unfortunately no critical analysis. 2. Anand Mulloo's only novel Watch Them Go Down (1957) is currently unavailable. A brief mention of the novel can be found in Bhautoo-Dewnarain (22). Deepchand C Beharry's best known novel is That Others Should Live. A Novel on the Tragic Life of Early Indian Immigrants in Mauritius (1976). See Pirbhai (48–65) for a meticulous analysis of the novel. 3. Collen's latest novel, The Malaria Man and Her Neighbour (Port Louis: Ledikasyon pu Travayer, 2010) is the second part of a trilogy on uprisings and rebellions, Mutiny being the first. 4. In 1993 Collen became the butt of a highly unexpected surge of Hindu fundamentalist rage as The Rape of Sita awakened accusations of blasphemy and insult against a revered Hindu heroine. For detailed discussions of the affair, see Ramharai ‘La réception de The rape of Sita’ and Thomas. 5. For a thorough survey of the history of Mauritius, see Selvon. 6. Kan Yolof or Camps des Yolofs is a deprived area of the Mauritian capital Port Louis or Porlwi as it is spelt in Creole. Alpers suggests its name indicates that West Africans were its first inhabitants (93).
