Abstract
A short survey of Italy’s relationship with the Atlantic alliance might be a good starting point for a general evaluation of the problems of NATO’s Southern Flank, since throughout the Cold War, if not afterwards as well, Italy has featured most of the problems which were typical of the Flank as a whole until the dissolution of the Soviet bloc. This article, therefore, will start the analysis of NATO’s Southern Flank first with a general description of the main characteristics of this area during and after the Cold War, and then trace the history of Italy’s complex link with NATO.
