Abstract

Optical sampling using short optical pulses is an important technique for optical waveform measurements. Experiments based on type II sum-frequency generation (SFG) in bulk crystal have been reported. The SFG efficiency, however, was in the order of 10/sup -2/%/W or less. A waveguide quasi-phase-matching (QPM) structure would offer much higher efficiencies. In this paper, we present design, fabrication and characterization of a LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide QPM-SFG device for high-efficiency optical sampling.
