Abstract

Breed of sire (Angus, Limousin, Simmental) and breed of dam (Angus, Hereford) effects were examined in 396 cow-calf data pairs, collected from 1972 to 1975. Production traits studied were birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), type score (TS), condition score (CS), and ratio of calf weight to cow weight (WR). Breed of sire by breed of dam interactions were significant in the TS and CS analyses. Exotic sires produced calves weighing 2.9 kg heavier (P<.01) in BW than Angus sires. Breed of dam effects were significant in WW and WR analyses. Angus cows produced calves weighing 28.1 kg heavier (P<.01) at weaning than Hereford cows. WR's were 51 ± 7 and 41 ± 5 for Angus and Hereford, respectively. Limousin and Simmental were very similar as sire breeds.
