Abstract

The lakes in Bangalore are disappearing fast and the ones that remain are on the verge of extinction. Bellandur Lake is 130 years old, situated in Varthur Hobli, towards Bangalore south of Bellandur village. The limnological monitoring study has been carried out during a year and the results reveals that the lake is highly eutrophic with low dissolved oxygen (DO) values and high concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate, phosphate and heavy metal concentrations as observed from the sludge samples. Extreme discharge of sewage and other effluents into the lake make the lake water unsuitable for drinking, bathing and the sustenance of the ecosystem as a whole. It is also attempted to identify the pollution level of the lake by employing the water quality index (WQI) method and the multivariate analysis.
