Abstract

The range of validity of a perturbation solution to the problem of nonlinear standing waves in rigid-walled ducts is discussed in the light of some recent published and unpublished data from a number of investigators. While most of the data were taken only at resonance frequencies, results can be inferred for frequencies slightly off resonance. The data suggest validity of two dimensionless parameters for both preshock and weakshock régimes. One parameter describes the strength of the wave and the other the frequency deviation from resonance, both with respect to a dimensionless dissipation constant.
