Abstract

Abstract Paroxysmal physical symptoms owing to panic attacks may be mistaken for medical illness, thereby delaying appropriate treatment while the suffering and disability progress. Panic attacks vary, and some patients have minimal cognitive, affective, or behavioral responses, thus obscuring the diagnosis. Limited-symptom attacks may also be a common cause of this missed or “masked” panic. Three illustrative cases of patients with such limitedsymptom attacks whose diagnosis was missed or delayed are presented, along with a checklist to help rule in panic disorder.
