Abstract

AimsWe describe a surgical technique of limited femorotomy for removing proximally coated cementless femoral stems utilizing a limited femoral osteotomy and report patient outcome data. MethodsPatients who had undergone revision hip surgery utilizing this technique were identified from the prospectively maintained database. We reviewed clinical and radiographic follow up data, including patient reported outcome measures. Results18 cases were identifies in 15 patients. Mean follow up was 138.3 months.Patient reported outcome measures including Harris Hip Score, Postel Score and Oxford scores all improved compared to pre-op.No stems showed evidence of loosening on radiographic review. No patients experienced thigh pain. No patients required further revision surgery. ConclusionThis technique permits safe removal of proximally coated femoral stems, with minimal soft tissue dissection and none of the potential complications of a more extensive osteotomy.
