Abstract

The variation in sound power output with environment of some sources has been studied. The theoretical variation of a monopole and dipole near a reflecting plane was confirmed experimentally. Similar measurements were made on a centrifugal fan, a commonly used reference sound source, in free and diffuse fields. The variation in sound power output of the centrifugal fan was significantly different to the behavior of a monopole or dipole. Errors in estimating sound power level can occur with the reference source method if the source is calibrated in a different environment to that in which it will be used. Universal corrections cannot be applied to all sources to compensate for changes in environment because various types of sources behave differently.
