Abstract
Multimodality limb-sparing approaches now represent the treatment of choice for patients with soft tissue sarcoma of the extremities. Patients undergoing limb-sparing treatment have survival comparable with that of those treated with amputation, with a potentially better functional outcome. Full realization of an improved quality of life for patients treated with limb-sparing approaches requires a timely, appropriately performed biopsy; proper surgical technique; and a committed team of rehabilitation specialists. Furthermore, the nonsurgical components of multimodality therapy, radiation and chemotherapy for example, can influence the overall functional outcome as dramatically as does the surgical procedure. This article details the essential elements for successful limb salvage with an optimal functional result in patients with extremity sarcomas.
