Abstract

Limb lengthening has been obtained using the technique of “epiphyseal separation-distraction”, initially in animal experiments and subsequently in operations on twenty-six human patients. The increase of length obtained ranged from 5–11 cm in the tibia and femur. There was no need for osteotomy, internal osteosynthesis, or bone grafting. The quality of the new bone formation was good and there have been no secondary fractures at the site of lengthening.
