Abstract

This text aims to approach aspects of Lima Barreto's work, having as scope its relation with the climate of political and social instability of the First Republic. The condition of Brazilian backwardness and the need to insert the country in the context of the transformations of world capitalism mark the place and social condition of which Lima Barreto is the spokesperson. In this way, the fragments collected from his writing are timely as dissonant elements in relation to what literature represents and its space of hegemonic affirmation of power. By inserting himself against the grain of facts, completely denying the dominant ideology, his work is situated as a tool to combat the merely decorative aspects of the literature that prevails in the cultural and political environment of his time.
