Abstract

Throughout the 1960s, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Television (CBC-TV) National News Service brought news of the United States’s domestic and foreign policies into the living rooms of English-speaking Canadians. This article examines the presentation of the United States government in a sample of 49 CBC-TV national news broadcasts— including complete newscasts and single news items from the CBC National News, national news filmpacks, and news specials—through a content analysis and qualitative analysis based on the linguistic intergroup bias model. The results suggest that the news was moderately favourable in its presentation of the United States government.
