Abstract

The physical characteristics of individual lightning return strokes which have been determined from quantitative analyses of time-resolved lightning spectra are reviewed. Relative line intensities of N II multiplets have been used to estimate channel opacity and temperature. Electron densities have been determined from H α line profiles and N I, O I and N II line intensity ratios. The temperature and electron density data have been used to calculate other channel parameters such as pressure, percent ionization and particle densities.
