Abstract

This paper introduced the lightning protection design of the first 1000-kV UHV transmission line in China. The analysis is based on the lightning leader propagation model by considering the lightning propagation process, which can consider the randomness of lightning process. The new phenomenon of middle-phase shielding failure was explained when two grounding wires are wide, and the side-phase shielding failure characteristics of 1000-kV ac transmission line were presented also. The measures to improve the effect of lightning protection of this UHV line are discussed, and the application is presented.
