Abstract

The code for lightning protection NFPA-780 has gone through a number of revisions since 1980 when the 'Zone of Protection' or 150 ft. final striking distance was introduced. An analysis of indiscriminate bonding of metal objects to the lightning protection system produced a new section on treatment of metal bodies. The use of a ground loop interconnecting all ground media has been added as a requirement for structures over 60 ft. in height. These changes help greatly in application of lightning protection systems to modern structures. >
