Abstract

Different type of composite material and metallic mesh are being used for wind turbine blade (WTB). In this paper, experiments were conducted to study the influence of material and metallic mesh on lightning attachment manner. Experiments using two specimens of wind turbine blade under different air gap were conducted to investigate the effect of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) on the attachment process. Wind turbine blade specimen I is made by CFRP with tip receptor and copper mesh as a lightning protection system (LPS), and wind turbine blade specimen II is made by GFRP has LPS including tip receptor made of aluminum and copper conductor inside WTB. The results between CFRP and GFRP are also compared which will be useful to improve the quality of wind turbine blade material and design of LPS for wind turbine blade.
