Abstract

By calculating the lightness and chroma of computer simulated surfaces lit by different lamps, this study shows that the average CIE 1976 chroma C* uv of surfaces lit by light of different spectral composition can be significantly different at a fixed illuminance. This study also shows the Spearman rank-order correlation is significant between the average C* uv and each of several light parameters, including gamut area, cone surface area, (S/P)1/2, and colour rendering capacity. The higher the value of any of these parameters for a lamp, the greater the average C*uv of surfaces lit under that lamp.
