Abstract

The term Smart Grid refers to a completely modernized electricity delivery system which monitors, protects and optimizes the operation of its interconnected elements from end to end. The Smart Grid is expected to affect all areas of the Electric Power System, generation, transmission, distribution and end consumers and citizens and their electric vehicles, street lighting services, and other household devices. There exists a huge potential to renew the very old existing street lighting and save in the energy consumption. In this paper, a novel remote management system for street lighting is presented. The management system is implemented using a wireless communication system and a lighting control protocol. Some aspects regarding the lighting control protocol and the communication system are discussed. Once selected, this paper focuses on developing a street lighting management system by making use of wireless sensor networks and DALI ballasts, presenting experimental results obtained from several tests.
