Abstract
Housefly heads contain a pink, digitonin soluble, light-sensitive pigment (λ max 510 nm) that corresponds to other measures of visual sensitivity and is believed to represent a native visual pigment. Both housefly and honeybee heads contain a buffersolublelight-sensitivepigment (λ max437nm) which has been identified as an ommochrome. The role of these pigments in vision is discussed.
