Abstract

A light scattering study is performed on dispersions of spherical latex particles in mixed water-urea solvent. A nonionic amphiphile is added to the dispersion for stabilization purpose. The particles are made of a fluorinated polymer (PFA), and possess a partially crystalline internal structure which makes them optically anisotropic. We show that from the light scattering data it is possible to derive not only the size of the particles, but also the thickness of the adsorbed amphiphile layer. Information is also obtained about the intrinsic optical anisotropy of the particles.
