Abstract

Static and dynamic light scattering has been measured for aqueous solutions of heptaoxyethylene alkyl ethers (C n E 7) and analyzed by one concentration method. While the micelle aggregation number, the radius of the sphere, and the second virial coefficient are independent of micelle concentration for C 10E 7 in water and in 1 M NaCl and C 12E 7 in water, these change with micelle concentration for C 10E 7 in 2 M NaCl, C 12E 7 in 1 M NaCl, and C 14E 7 in water. The third virial coefficient, the friction coefficient, and the hydrodynamic virial coefficient are independent of micelle concentration for all systems. With variation of micelle aggregation numbers from 60 to 220, the second virial coefficient decreases from 2.4 to 0.7 × 10 −4 mole cm 3 g −2, and the third virial coefficient, the friction coefficient, and the hydrodynamic virial coefficient are (0.4-1.1) × 10 −3 mole cm 6g −3, (11–19) cm 3g −1, and (0.7-1.3) cm 3g −1, respectively.
