Abstract

In this work, we report the miscibility of blends of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and a novel copolymer of 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl) methyl vinyl ether (OVE) and acrylonitrile (AN) [poly(OVE-co-AN)], which had been synthesized in this laboratory from the reaction of CO 2 with oxirane. It was found from the optical clarity, thermal analysis, and light scattering studies that the blends were miscible over the entire blend compositions. Based on the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the blends, the interaction energy density (Λ, cal/cm 3) between poly(OVE-co-AN) and PVC was given in the functional form, Λ=−0.06495–0.001290 φ+0.0002237 T, where φ and T are the volume fraction of the copolymer and absolute temperature in Kelvin, respectively.
