Abstract

A single ended Van de Graaff accelerator fitted with a radio-frequency ion source of probeless extraction geometry has been tested as a source of light heavy-ion and molecular beams in different charge states. It has been proved in Rutherford scattering analysis of the magnetically resolved beam components that the high energy double charged beam is mixed with a beam of low energy molecular fragments of the same momentum. Conclusions are drawn on how such sources can be applied in ion-atom collision physics and nuclear microanalysis.
