Abstract

Eight both symmetrical and non-symmetrical bistolanes with terminal alkyl-, alkoxy- and alkysulphanyl- chain and lateral chlorine atom have been synthesized via Sonogashira cross-coupling and their mesomorphic, optical and photoluminescence properties have been studied. All compounds exhibit enantiotropic nematic and exhibit high value of birefringence (>0.30). The photoluminescence properties both in the diluted solution, solid states and liquid crystal phase were evaluated. Measured compounds emit fluorescence in all states. The correlation between the compounds structure and their properties have been explained using molecular simulation.
