Abstract

The time at which polyketide synthesis in Alternaria alternata is inhibited by white light was examined. Light exposure during the growth phase (no polyketide production) inhibited accumulation of polyketides at stationary growth phase. A light pulse during the production phase also inhibited further accumulation of polyketides. Two minutes of light applied during early production phase was enough to reduce polyketide levels significantly at the end of incubation relative to dark control.
