Abstract

The article discusses physics research by a team at the U.S. film production company Pixar Animation Studios investigating the complex way that light reflects off cars. According to the author, producers of the animated film "Cars 2" realized that Pixar's three-dimensional (3D) lighting system needed to be upgraded. An overview of the creation of computer software capable of creating scenes that appear illuminated from every angle is presented.
