Abstract

Summary:Four patients with uncontrollable pelvic haemorrhage due to various causes are presented. Bleeding was brought under control by performing bilateral hypogastric artery ligation in 3 patients and bilateral uterine artery ligation in 1 patient. The available literature on the subject is reviewed. All obstetricians and gynaecologists should be familiar with these techniques and should not hesitate in their performance in situations where other measures fail to control the bleeding.Of the two procedures, we consider that uterine artery ligation is superior, since it is easier, quicker, requires less manipulation, and it stops uterine bleeding by shutting off the major portion of the blood flow to the uterus.
