Abstract
The loads for collapse of plates with semi-elliptical surface flaws have been evaluated by a weight-function method incorporating stress intensity factors using results from a line-spring model. A simplified equation has been developed for the collapse load, and incorporated in a modified strip yield model including toughness dependence, for estimating failure stresses of cylinders with external axial surface defects. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental ones.
