Abstract

As every commercial airline passenger knows, air travel security and convenience are often at odds with each other. It starts with check-in, where travellers must present their biographical identification (driver's licence or passport) to an airline agent. There may also be a checked bag self-drop, where the ID process is at least partially replicated. Moments later, before even reaching passenger/carry-on screening, travellers have to re-confirm their identity by again presenting biographical data, this time to transportation security agents. With international travel, the process is repeated again on arrival, as authorities verify each passenger's identity at immigration and customs. And each checkpoint typically greets travellers with queues – often very long ones.
