Abstract
We consider the diffraction of a planar shock propagating parallel to a plate with a static sphere located above the flat plate. The shock wave reflection produces, in addition to a drag force, a lift component due to the asymmetric interaction with the flat plate. Spheres ranging from 10 µm to 10 mm diameter are considered, with a gap ratio h/ D in the range 0.0001–0.1. The shock Mach numbers are from 1.1 to 2. Both inviscid and laminar viscous flow computations are presented.
