Abstract

The mean lifetimes of levels in 39Ca and 39K have been measured with the Doppler-shift attenuation method. With the 40Ca( 3He, αγ) 39Ca reaction and α-γ coincidence measurements the mean lifetimes τ m of the 2.47 and 2.80 MeV states have been found to be 260 ± 80 fs and > 16 ps, respectively. The lifetimes of the 2.81 and 3.60 MeV states of 39K have been measured using the reaction 36Ar(α,pγ) 39K and stopping the recoils in the target gas. The mean-lives for these two levels are 63 ± 10 ps and 60 ± 9 ps, respectively.
