Abstract

The electron-photon delayed coincidence technique has been used for the first time to measure lifetimes in metal ions. This work is described and lifetime measurements on the first three excited states of cadmium II are reported. These states together with their measured lifetimes are as follows: 52P3/2,1/2 (3.55+or-0.15) ns, a 2D3/2 (290+or-10) ns, a 2D5/2(720+or-40) ns.
