Abstract

Cadmium vapour enclosed in a cell was excited continuously by a beam of slow electrons. The Hanle effect was investigated for visible 5-10 1D2 to 5 1P1 and UV 5-10 3D3 to 5 3P2 transitions. Lifetimes of the D levels were measured from Hanle curves which were free from the cascade effect.
