Abstract
This feature demonstrates an attempt to improve the serviceability of elastomer seals by optimizing the shape of a seal with metal end caps, which limit extrusion and increase lifetime. An expression for calculating the lifetime of the elastomeric components based on the time to onset of fracture was investigated and used in conjunction with experimentally derived parameters to predict seal lifetime for a range of temperatures and pressures.
