Abstract

Pulsed nitrogen laser photolysis of 2-acetonaphthone solubilized in air-saturated sodium dodecyl sulphate micelles in D 2O or H 2O results in the triplet sensitized production of singlet oxygen. This species reacts with micelle-solubilized substrates with rate constants typical of such reactions in homogeneous solutions in organic solvents. The lifetime of singlet oxygen in this sytem is essentially that for the pure aqueous medium, 30 μs for D 2O, 3 μs for H 2O.
